Nowadays, more and more people own a scanner. That's because their price got extremely low, while their quality improved. Scanners are currently used for converting documents from paper into digital format, for viewing them on the computer. Unfortunately, scanned documents can't be edited, because the output format produced by a scanner is either JPEG or PDF. In both cases, scanned documents will only allow the user to view them, but not edit the text they contain. This is where the OCR technology comes in. It's an optical character recognizing technology which is able to convert any text contained by an image file into editable text.

The problem is to find the right software for doing this. PDF OCR is just the right program. Just as its name says, this software is able to convert any PDF file into an editable text document, in the shortest time possible. But that's not all this Windows program can do. It can also convert scanned image files into PDF documents.

As it's a Windows application, PDF OCR features a familiar installer and a simple graphical interface. At first, the user can select either to convert a PDF file into an editable document or to convert an image into a PDF file. Using the first option, one can add any PDF document into the program's interface, no matter the number of pages it contains. After doing this, the user can select which pages should be scanned using the OCR technology. By default, the program will convert the entire PDF into an editable document. After configuring this, one can simply click on the START OCR button for quickly converting all the pages of the PDF file into editable text. At the end of the process, the text will be displayed in WordPad and the user can save it as a regular text file.

Besides scanning PDF documents, PDF OCR can also convert image files into regular PDF documents. The program is compatible with numerous image files and allows selecting their quality level when viewed inside the PDF file. An unlimited number of image files can be added to the program's interface. Just like converting PDFs into text, the user can start the image conversion process using a single click.

Pros

It can convert any PDF document into editable text, no matter the number of pages contained by the PDF file. Besides that, various types of image files can be converted into PDF documents, using configurable quality settings.

Cons

The PDF files created using the user's images will have a watermark displayed on them. Besides that, the OCR technology does not support so many languages. Furthermore, the trial version can only convert 3 pages of a PDF file at a time. PDF OCR is the perfect solution for turning any PDF file into an editable document and any image format into a PDF document.
